Stewardship

Moving from Ownership to Stewardship
From Unraveling to Unfolding

Construction

Ownership: “the act, state or right of possessing something”

Stewardship: “the activity or job of protecting and being responsible for something”

At Unfold, we’ve discarded the word “ownership” from our dictionary as possession diminishes the collaboration that is core to our process. By leading with a stewardship lens, we see our projects and team members as vessels for reciprocity and responsibility.

As climate change becomes the forefront of navigating today’s world, conventional reactions are unraveling without vocation or direction. Houses and land are deteriorating, but all require different remedies depending on their location.

At Unfold, we start with place to influence next steps. Our strategies, team members, and materials are pertinent to each project’s eco-region and biome.

Nurturing an art institute on its path to connect community + nature

The merger of housing+art for human relation

Residencies of Change (RoC) is an Unfold-led initiative and partnership with local art institutes to provide more spaces for artists to work on pieces that stimulate awareness of social and environmental needs. Read more
Unfold Development believes that the expression of art is the solution to human relation. The more we can relate, the more we can understand. However, cities increasingly have fewer spaces for artist residencies as well as a lack of affordable housing. Therefore, artists have less opportunities to create and less time to conceptualize visuals of change - and communities have less exposure to issues that will expand their lens.

Unfold Development will find, develop, design, and fund maker spaces, housing opportunities, and unique exhibits. Applications for artist residencies will be reviewed by a committee led by Unfold + partners, choosing artists that are determined to possess an innovative approach to art reflecting a variety ofthemes, including: climate change, ecology, environmental justice, and beyond.
